2016 End of Year Events

To celebrate the end of the year, MUTKD held our second MUTKD Taekwon Games and End of Year Lunch and Karaoke Party.

The closing training session for the year was on 25th November where we played a series of games organised by Sabonim Tuan. Three teams, Ric & The Asians, TMNT and Team Ace, were formed and vied for the coveted title of being the 2016 (2nd) MUTKD Taekwon Games champion.

Mitt Hockey made its return from last year as the first event. This is a game where kicking mitts are used as hockey sticks to manoeuvre a ball to score goals. Teams played rounds of five minutes each against one another. The first event ended with Ric & The Asians scoring no points and TMNT and Team Ace scoring one point each.

The second event was Spin, Run & Kick in which all teams had to complete a relay by spinning on the spot with a mitt, running through a ladder and proceeding to perform a set of roundhouse kicks of ten times for each leg in the shortest time. Surprisingly, many people managed to maintain their balance and no one fell! TMNT came in first, with Team Ace closely behind in second and Ric & The Asians third.

The final event was Kick T-Ball. Similar to baseball, two teams were fielding and one team was batting. The batting team had to “bat” with different kicks, starting with a roundhouse kick, followed by a spinning roundhouse kick and a back hook kick. Only TMNT scored enough runs to reach the back hook kick phase of the game with thirteen runs. Ric & The Asians and Team Ace tied with each other of seven runs each.

After calculating the scores from all three events, TMNT emerged as the 2016 (2nd) MUTKD Taekwon Games champions, with Team Ace as the first runner-up and Ric & The Asians as the second runner-up. A mini awards ceremony (as in the literal sense, miniature medals were awarded) was held. A huge thanks to Sabonim Tuan for organising such a creative event to end a fruitful year and to everyone who attended. Videos of the events have been uploaded on the MUTKD Facebook Group for your viewing pleasure.

In keeping up with viral internet trends, MUTKD also attempted the Mannequin Challenge where we struck skillful poses such as roundhouse kicks, side kicks and punches. A few of us opted for more playful poses though. Credits to Sabonim Tuan for filming the video for the Mannequin Challenge.

The next day, we had korean-chinese cuisine at Han Guuk Guan for our annual End of Year Lunch. The awards handed out were for MVP, Best Muscle Memory aka Drunken Poomsae, Best Dressed aka Best Pants Splitter,Pinnacle Achievement, Coach Appreciation , Rookie of the Year, Best Improvement, Colour Trumps Black, Long Legacy and Certified in Leadership and Motherhood. We continued to throw our Karaoke Party filled with soulful renditions of ballads and head bangings to rock songs.

2015 End of Year Events

As the year draws to a close, MUTKD had a few final events including The Inaugural MUTKD Taekwon Games as well as an End of Year Celebration for the club.

The final training of the year was held on the 27th November and to end the year, Sabonim Tuan arranged for something a little bit different from our usual trainings. Thus, we held the first Inaugural MUTKD Taekwon Games. We separated into three teams – Popocatepefl, Rainbow Warriors and Good For Nothing – and competed in various events in order to win the cup (and glory).

Mitt Hockey was the first event, a game where we use the kicking mitts to maneuver a ball and shoot for goals. Each team played two eight minute rounds, one against each of the other teams. Overall, Popocatetpefl scored no points, Rainbow Warriors scored two points and Good For Nothing scored one point.

For our next game, we played Balloon Relay, where we use our heads and legs in order to move a balloon back and forth (which is much harder than it sounds). In the final, Popocatepefl won with Good For Nothing in second and Rainbow Warriors in last place.

The next round was the Spin, Run and Kick Relay, which is played exactly as the name suggests – to spin around 5 times before running through a ladder and performing 20 round-house kicks (10 on each side). There was a lot of crooked walking and falling to be witnessed on all sides. This round was won by Popocatepefl, followed by Rainbow Warriors and finally Good For Nothing in last place.12278645_956090727805287_2920745413674662115_n12289770_956090584471968_6845960193827067007_n

Finally, we ended this year’s game with a round of Kick Tee-Ball, with two teams fielding and one batting. Popocatepefl once again dominated with 5 runs with Good for Nothing scoring 4 (with 2 home runs) and Rainbow Warriors also scoring 4 runs.

With all the results tallied, this year’s winners were Popocatepefl with Rainbow Warriors in second and Good For Nothing in third place. A mini awards ceremony was held afterwards. Thank you to Sabonim Tuan for organizing this super fun event to end the year. As always, he uploaded videos of the competitions onto the MUTKD Facebook Group, so feel free to check them out if you have not already.

The following week, the members of the MUTKD Committee organized an End of Year Celebration with some KBBQ and Karaoke. With good food, crazy singing and even better company, there was no better way to end the year.

We’re happy to announce that they did well! Overall, MUTKD won 3 Gold, 2 Silver and 1 Bronze. We do hope that more members could join the team in 2016. Are competitions your cup of tea? If so, we would like you to come train with us! For more details, please click on “training sessions and membership” for more details.

MUTKD’s First Social Event

For the second part of the semester, marketing directors Christine and Jeremy have decided to organize a midnight to dawn laser tag event (Saturday, 15 August 2015). Yes, you read that right. MIDNIGHT TO DAWN! We had about 10 sessions of games (sometimes we form groups and sometimes we fight solo) with 10-15 minute breaks in between. We also got free access to the arcade (bonus!) and needless to say, we spent our breaks there for the rest of the day…

We had a blast and I am surprised that most of us managed to last until 7AM!  We managed to catch up with old members, exercise (you have no idea how bad our quads hurt the next day) from midnight to dawn (so hardcore), had excessive amounts of junk food (it’s all about balancing guys) and Maccas for breakfast on the very next day (what’s not to love?).

Sounds like a perfect outing, don’t you think? 🙂

Congratulations!

Although the training was tiring, we were glad to learn something new. As Australian Uni Games approaches, subonim (coach) will tailor the training sessions to include more footwork and sparring techniques to prepare potential fighters for the competition. What’s great with MUTKD club is that we do not separate beginners from the more experienced members when training. This will not only enable beginners to pick up on the more difficult techniques earlier but they will also be stronger fighters in the future. This week, subonim gave out the grading certificates to MUTKD members who graded last semester. Those with yellow belts were beginners at the start of the year and in one semester they have moved up one (or two) level(s)! So proud of them 🙂 Now MUTKD club has more students with yellow and blue belts (+one black belt)! As mentioned, MUTKD club is for everyone so do not feel intimated. Drop by during one of our training sessions and give it a go! Never try never know, right?

Congratulations once again guys! Keep training hard and make us proud!

Back to University

Hello hello! Are you excited for semester 2? Hopefully you had a great winter break. As some of you might already know, MUTKD club was at the Clubs Day event last Tuesday to promote their club to new students. Clubs Day was filled with fun (and strong winds too) but the committee members were happy that there was quite a number of people who showed interest in practicing Taekwondo! There were a couple of new students who dropped by last Wednesday to train with us. I have to say, as beginners, they did a really good job! One of the new students noticed that there were only 10-15 students at training last Wednesday and asked if this is all the members in the MUTKD club. During the break, it is common that we will only have 10-15 students at training. This is because most of them went on a vacation/went back home/had shifts that clash with training times etc. But when university starts, everything will be back to normal (training will be more intense and you will meet a lot of old members!).

Have a great first week and we hope to see you at training!
